Old Dutch cleanser was trademarked in 1905, and registered in 1906. It took its name from from the tradition in Holland, where residents were known for their preoccupation with cleanliness. It was first created by Cudahy Packing in Chicago. Old Dutch cleanser was one of the big brands of pumice-based kitchen cleaners, along with Bon Ami and Comet. The cleaning lady was designed by Maude E. Sutherland.
