Master Service...with a smile!
This picture is from our local newspaper, the Statesman Journal. The man washing the windows is a local resident of Keizer (Berl Davis), here in Oregon. This was taken at Master Service Station in Salem. Back then, if you took your car there, you had someone inspecting under the hood, washing windows, checking air in the tires, and someone sweeping the inside of your car. All while you fill up your car with gas. Davis told the Statesman Journal that "you wouldn't believe how dirty a white shirt can get at a gas station". In those days, people were happy to help you, and at the end of it, chances are you'd get a smile too.

Catalin Radio
The term "Catalin" was used for a material that was popular for radio cabinets. In the early 1930's the American Catalin Corporation started the production of many items in Catalin, from jewelry to belt buckles to napkin rings. Then, Catalin began to be used in larger items such as radio cabinets. Although the bright, pretty colors of these catalin cabinets were expensive (ranging from $9.95 to $49.95), they were still very popular . America was the leader in the design and styling of these radios. Companies such as Emerson, Fada and Sentinel provided breathtaking sets that emulated the art-deco movement.
Although these were made during the time of the Depression, they were beautiful and are still very popular to this day! I especially love the bright colors, and the radios almost look like little purses.

Kit-Cat
The Kit-Cat clock was first made in 1932, during the Depression, in Oregon by Earl Arnault. The Allied Clock Company was founded in Portland. The clocks were first welded with metal, but eventually, plastic was used in its place. The company then moved to Washington.
In the 40s and 50s, the clocks saw a huge growth in popularity. There were also some changes made to them: paws and a bow tie. Kit-Cat became an icon. Today, there are colorful Kit-Cat clocks, and even ones with pearls and eye lashes.
This year marks Kit-Cat's 80th anniversary... fifty years making the clocks in California and thirty years with Woody Young as president. Kit-Cat clocks are now sold in stores around the world.
